A Local Sporting Legend Recognised at Narromine's Cale Oval

The Bob Weir Grandstand at Cale Oval will be officially opened on Saturday 29 April 2023 by Member for Dubbo The Hon Dugald Saunders MP. The newly constructed grandstand will be named after the late Mr Bob Weir a Narromine Rugby League stalwart and sporting great.

“It is great to see the Cale Oval Grandstand completed and appropriately named. The late Mr Bob Weir played rugby league for 20 years and is considered one of Narromine’s greatest local sportsman. He donned both NSW and country league jerseys, played in international clashes and won three premierships as the coach of Narromine Jets Rugby League Club,” said Narromine Shire Council’s Mayor Clr Craig Davies.

The Cale Oval Grandstand upgrade project was jointly funded by the Australian Government, NSW Government’s Resources for Regions Program and Narromine Shire Council. Australian Government funding of $480,000 was provided through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Program. This funding supports local councils to delivery priority local road and community infrastructure projects across Australia.

Narromine Shire Council secured $1,380,000 in funding for improvements and construction of the Bob Weir Grandstand including $900,000 contribution from NSW Government’s Resources for Regions Program. The Resources for Regions program is part of the $2 billion Regional Growth Fund, designed to support growing regional centres, activate local economies and improve services and community infrastructure for regional communities.

The multipurpose Grandstand and club facilities are well integrated into the overall Cale Oval Sporting Precinct. The area has been designed to host a range of sporting, recreational and community events in an open and unique space in the centre of Narromine.

Construction activity currently underway includes a complete refurbishment of Narromine’s Tennis Club and Courts, this stage will see the finalisation of the Cale Oval Sporting Precinct.

The redevelopment is designed to benefit sporting and recreation users for many years to come. Narromine has a strong and long association with all sports, after all it is regarded as the 'Town of Champions', added Clr Davies.
